Burma has had many problems facing its children. There are disparities between children in different areas of the country. The overall situation of children in major towns tends to be considerably better than in rural and urban resettlement areas. In the most remote border areas, some ethnic communities have virtually no public services because of armed conflicts and problems of accessibility. According to World Bank estimates, approximately one in four households in Burma live below the poverty line according to UNICEF. Many children are left on their own without hope for a meal much less a future.
The Tachilek orphanage
was open to service the Wa resettlement
region. In 2001 and 2002, over
150,000 (and possibly up to 250,000)
Wa people were forced to move from
their northern home along the Saween
River region to the border of China
within the Northern Shan State area to
the lower regions along the
Thai/Burma border. There has been
much sickness, poverty, and fighting in
this region, and there are many orphans.
